Destination 1957 PLYMOUTH Time Capsule!

Destination 1957 PLYMOUTH Time Capsule!

On June 16, 2007, a brand spankin’ new 1957 Plymouth Belvedere Sport Coupe will be unearthed after spending the last fifty years in a time capsule buried on the front lawn of the county courthouse in Tulsa, Oklahoma. And someone, whoever then, in 1957, guessed closest to what the population of Tulsa would be in 2007, will win the car. If they are no longer among us the car will be given to their next of kin.

This amazing time capsule was part of “Tulsarama,” the city’s celebration of Oklahoma’s semi-centennial. Among the other things in the time capsule is a bottle of tranquilizers and a case of beer. The big question is what condition will the car be in? Nobody knows. Will it be a rust bucket or pristine?

There is SO no way that I’m going to miss this event. I’ve been waiting for the unearthing of this car since I read a tiny article on it in a classic car magazine in 1989. It was one of those “gee, how-old-will-I-be-then?” moments. I promised myself I would be there no matter what. Well the time has come and I’m on my way. And I’ll be bloging my whole classic car road trip there beginning Sunday June 10th here.

For more on the 1957 PLYMOUTH TIME CAPSULE watch the youtube video.

Here’s to the unearthing of the 1957 Plymouth Time Capsule and YOU!

  1. Casey Jones Says:

Now, how cool is this? My very first thought was, how can I get there? I can hardly wait for the video! Thank you for being our pop-history ambassador, Charles!

  2. Cynthia Kirk Says:

Charles, I hope you let us know how this went! I’d love to know if the winner collected his or her prize.

  3. Chris Carnaghi Says:

Somehow, someway, I would love to see you drive that baby home! Now that would be a Charles Phoenix adventure. I think that it will be in pristine condition. The tires will be flat though.

  4. Tim Severs Says:

Wow. That would be a sight to see. Hope you make it there, Charles.

  5. Raul Says:

How terribly exciting! Imagine, a 50 year old car with almost no miles on it!

  6. Barbara Says:

Oh Charles - how absolutely wonderful and what a perfectly grand Charles Phoenix adventure!!!!

  7. Holly Says:

Yay, Charles Phoenix is coming to Tulsa! I can’t wait! I sure would love to shake your hand–even more incentive to brave the crowds downtown that day.

  8. Valerie Says:

    Charles honey,

You, and ONLY you, should drive this baby home! Your passengers should be Johnny Depp, Ann Margaret and Little Richard.

Oh and don’t forget the air kisses as you wave to the fans.

  9. Holly Says:

Oh Charles, I’m sure it’s just a typo, but the unearthing is on Friday, the 15th, not the 16th and I would so hate for you to miss it, and me to miss the opportunity to meet you. Can’t wait to see you in T-Town!

  10. Scott Says:

Just happened to look on Wikipedia for info on David Gates of the group “Bread”– it says he had a band when he was in high school in Tulsa… and in 1957 they backed up Chuck Berry!

  11. Swanky Says:

If only it was a ‘57 Fury, I’d be there! The Fury was a swank ride. But, the Belvedere is not far off.

The notion that the car was prone to rust has more to do with driving it, not parking it. Most old cars are judged by the rust the shows up under the trim pieces and behind the rear tires on the fenders. Some are horrible, like my old 1964 Barracuda, some good, like my 1963 Mercury. But, parked in a concrete tomb, who knows?

I look forward to seeing it!

  12. Ted Otis Says:

I would love to see it come out looking like the peach that it is but my understanding of how relentless water can be over time leads me to suspect it may need more than some turtle wax to bring it back. HOPE I’M WRONG!! Bon Voyage Charles, can’t wait for the juicy details!

  13. David and Gina Atkinson Says:

Now is your chance to see the Tulsa Driller in person! You should check out www.losttulsa.com before you go.

  14. randy lopez Says:

    you ‘da best!

  15. Gary Cliser Says:

I was born in 1957… so in a twisted way, I felt somehwat young again, after looking at the condition of that Plymouth. Even still, a great story.

  16. Ezio Says:

Hi Charles. I like this picture. I would like to cross America with this car of 1957. These pictures my friend Charles make my day really. My heart and soul are there! The fifties with the most beautiful cars and women!!
